Admissions Requirements

Master's (M.S.)

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, math, physics, computer science, chemistry, biology, or related STEM field.

  • Minimum undergraduate GPA: 3.0 (out of 4.0).

  • At least three semesters of calculus required

Doctoral (Ph.D.)

  • Minimum GPA: 3.5 (undergraduate) or 3.0 (graduate).

  • Two entry routes: traditional (after M.S.) and direct-admit from bachelor’s

Required Application Materials

All materials must be submitted through the Graduate School online application portal.

  • Online application
  • Unofficial transcripts (official transcripts required upon admission)
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Statement of purpose
  • Resume or CV
  • English proficiency documentation (if applicable)

Application Fees


  • Domestic Applicant: $55.00
  • International Applicant: $65.00

All application fees are considered non-refundable. This fee must be paid in order for the application to be considered complete and enter into consideration.

The Department and the College of Engineering do not currently have a way to waive the application fee, even for applicants experiencing financial hardship. Individuals who choose to submit a complete application will be thoughtfully reviewed.

Please note, applications will not be reviewed until all required materials have been received by the University.

Spring 2027 applications open: August 1, 2026

Fall Semester (August Start)

  • December 31, 2026 — 11:59 PM: First consideration for funding
  • February 28, 2027 — 11:59 PM: Considered for remaining funding

Spring Semester (January Start)

  • August 31, 2026 — 11:59 PM

Funding


  • Departmental assistantships are awarded in conjunction with admissions decisions.
  • Applicants meeting the first-consideration deadline are reviewed first for funding.
  • Additional fellowship and funding opportunities are available through the Graduate School.

Hands-On Nuclear Research with Our On-Campus TRIGA Reactor

At the University of Utah, graduate students have access to one of the nation’s few on-campus research nuclear reactors.
Our TRIGA (Training, Research, Isotopes, General Atomics) reactor provides rare, hands-on research opportunities in areas such as radiation detection, isotope production, nuclear forensics, and reactor physics, bridging classroom learning with real experimental experience.
