We offer an M.S. (non-thesis) and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering. With a commitment to innovation and excellence in nuclear engineering research, the Utah Nuclear Engineering Program (UNEP) aims to push the boundaries of multidisciplinary nuclear-related fields.
M.S. Non-Thesis
Students in a M.S. non-thesis degree program complete 30 hours of graduate credit coursework, culminating in a non-technical essay-based examination.

Ph.D.
We offer a traditional Ph.D. where applicants will have completed a M.S. prior or Direct Admit Ph.D. for applicants that are highly qualified students who have completed a B.S. emphasizing scholarly research activities and expedited progress towards degree completion.

Hands-On Nuclear Research with Our On-Campus TRIGA Reactor
At the University of Utah, graduate students have access to one of the nation’s few on-campus research nuclear reactors.
Our TRIGA (Training, Research, Isotopes, General Atomics) reactor provides rare, hands-on research opportunities in areas such as radiation detection, isotope production, nuclear forensics, and reactor physics, bridging classroom learning with real experimental experience.
