Graduate Remedial Coursework


Purpose

Below are the minimum required remedial courses as defined by the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. Completion of these courses is required for eligibility for a Master’s degree in Civil & Environmental Engineering for students whose prior area of study is outside civil engineering.

Remedial Coursework Options

Students may satisfy remedial requirements by completing the University of Utah course or a pre-approved online alternative listed in this official remedial course plan.

  • The online option must match the approved provider and course specified by the Department.
  • Students must submit the certificate of completion for each approved online course to the Graduate Advisor and Director of Graduate Studies.
  • Courses may also be taken at another accredited institution (e.g., Salt Lake Community College).
  • Students do not need to complete all remedial courses before applying to the graduate program.

Ph.D. Students

  • Ph.D. students are not required to complete all Master’s remedial courses.
  • Their remedial coursework may be determined by the Faculty Advisor and Supervisory Committee.
  • If a Ph.D. student leaves the program before finishing, all required Master’s remedial courses must be completed for the M.S. to be awarded.

Math:

  • MATH 1210: Calculus I
  • MATH 1220: Calculus II or MATH 1310: Engineering Calculus I
  • MATH 2210: Calculus III or MATH 1320: Engineering Calculus II
  • MATH 2250: Differential Equations and Linear Algebra.

Science:

Basic Engineering:

The above courses are required for all Master’s degree-seeking students in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. In addition, students must complete area-specific remedial courses based on their program emphasis. Depending on the selected area of study - Environmental/Water Resources, Transportation, or Structural/Geotechnical Engineering - students are required to complete the corresponding additional course(s) listed below. These area-specific courses ensure adequate foundational knowledge aligned with each discipline’s core competencies.

  • CVEEN 3510: Civil Engineering Materials

Geotechnical Engineering:

  • CVEEN 3310: Geotechnical Engineering
  • CVEEN 3015: Geo-Mat Lab
    • Prior to Fall 2025, this lab was numbered CVEEN 3315: Geotechnical Lab

Structural Engineering:

  • CVEEN 3210: Structural Load and Analysis
  • CVEEN 4222: Concrete I or CVEEN 4221: Steel I
