Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

CVEEN (Civil and Environmental Engineering) Statement on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

At CVEEN, we take Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) to the next level. Beyond supporting and promoting our students, staff, and faculty of minority backgrounds, we believe that Civil and Environmental Engineering (CVEEN) is an industry at the center of EDI. From the uprooting of neighborhoods for the construction of highways to the illegal dumping of toxic waste in underserved communities, Civil Engineers have a responsibility to remediate legacy waste and build sustainable communities of the future. This starts by training our students in environmental justice and ensuring that every student in our classroom is welcome.

For us, diversity is creating stable access to running water, power, and the internet in all communities. Equity is ensuring that the drinking water exceeds EPA standards, the power is always on, and internet connections are fast. Inclusion is training the next generation of diverse and underprivileged engineers to become local, state, and national leaders so that they can oversee the spending of future infrastructure initiatives. We believe a resilient world is a more diverse world where communities of color, indigenous tribes, immigrants, LGBTQ+, and all gender and gender fluidity persons are given equal access to improving infrastructure.

Whether you’re an undergraduate student, graduate student, staff, or faculty, know that we support you. There is no place for bias, sexism, or racism within CVEEN. If you experience or see any discrimination, then please report it at Safe U, communicate the incident to our department chair, or reach out to any member of our JEDI (Justice Equity Diversity Inclusion) committee. We will listen to you, and we will provide you with a safe and welcoming learning atmosphere.

Are you passionate about building fair and diverse societies? Then bring your ideas and your voice as a student representative to our EDI committee! We want to hear your experiences and ideas to help us create a more inclusive future.
