Ronald H. Dunn, SE, Chairman and Principal of Dunn Associates, Inc., has built a career defined by turning ambitious ideas into built reality. As the 2026 Distinguished Alumni honoree from the University of Utah’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CvEEN), Dunn’s impact on the structural engineering profession—starting in Utah and spreading across the United States—is both deep and enduring.
Dunn earned his B.S. in Civil & Environmental Engineering from the University of Utah in 1982, followed by certification as a Value Engineer from the University of California, Berkeley in 1984. These foundations shaped a career focused not only on technical excellence but also on delivering practical, cost-effective solutions.
As Chairman and Principal—as well as founder—of Dunn Associates, a Salt Lake City–based consulting structural engineering firm licensed in more than 40 states, Ron has guided a practice committed to enabling great design. The firm emphasizes close collaboration with clients, continuous evaluation of cost and constructability, and the integration of evolving technologies to achieve efficient, buildable solutions. This philosophy reflects Dunn’s belief that “designs are not real until they get built,” a principle that has guided his hands-on involvement in the conceptual phases of numerous high-profile projects.
Throughout his career, Dunn has contributed to significant advancements in structural engineering. He played a key role in the design of the first base-isolated building in the United States and pioneered innovative approaches such as steel structures without base plates on columns. His work demonstrates a willingness to challenge convention in pursuit of better outcomes.
Beyond project work, Dunn has been an active voice and leader in the engineering community. He has written as a columnist for a business newspaper, served on the University of Utah’s National Engineering Advisory Council, and currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Tribalry, a private community-based social media platform. Within his firm, he is recognized as a mentor who has guided many young engineers to become respected leaders in the profession.
