Seminar Series: Dr. Rachel Brennan
April 10, 2026Ecological Design and the Nitrogen Bioeconomy
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering concluded its Spring 2026 Seminar Series with a full house for a seminar by Dr. Rachel Brennan, Department Head and Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Colorado State University.
The strong turnout of students, faculty, and members of the engineering community highlighted continued interest in cutting-edge research and the value of bringing leading experts to campus.
Dr. Brennan’s seminar, “Transforming the Nitrogen Bioeconomy through Ecological Design,” showcased her innovative, multi-million-dollar research program focused on using aquatic plants to purify complex waste streams while generating valuable byproducts such as fertilizers, fuels, and food. Her work emphasizes the development of sustainable, circular systems that address global environmental challenges.
In addition to her core research, Dr. Brennan shared perspectives on transdisciplinary projects, including work in Ecuador that examines the intersection of natural resource protection and human rights in regions impacted by oil extraction.
Dr. Brennan’s distinguished career includes faculty leadership at both Pennsylvania State University and Colorado State University, as well as recognition from organizations such as the National Science Foundation, Environmental Protection Agency, and Fulbright Program. Her work bridges research, practice, and global collaboration in environmental engineering.
The seminar provided an engaging conclusion to the semester, reinforcing the department’s commitment to fostering dialogue around sustainability, innovation, and real-world impact.
The department looks forward to continuing the CvEEN Seminar Series in Fall 2026, bringing more cutting-edge research and leading voices in civil and environmental engineering to campus.
