Dr. Michael Darter, 2024

Professor Emeritus, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

An internationally recognized leader in pavement engineering, Dr. Michael Darter has advanced the field through both academic research and professional practice. Over his 30-year tenure as a faculty member of civil engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Dr. Darter brought in significant funding for students who together conducted research and published hundreds of influential technical papers and became a leading expert in highway and airport structural pavement systems, receiving numerous prestigious national and international awards.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Darter founded ERES Consultants, Inc., where he applied his research to real-world challenges, guiding major projects and national initiatives in pavement evaluation, rehabilitation, design, and construction. His legacy includes a career that spans education, entrepreneurship, and impactful engineering practice, culminating in over four decades of service before his retirement in 2022.

“Whenever I think of my BS and MS degree studies at the University of Utah, I immediately think of how Professor and Department Head Grant Borg advised and encouraged me to get up and keep going and never give up when difficult family, financial, and academic events occurred.”

Dr. Michael Darter's distinguished career, marked by significant contributions to transportation infrastructure engineering, exceptional leadership in research and practice, and a commitment to teaching and mentorship, positions him as a deserving recipient of the CvEEN Distinguished Alumni Award. His achievements not only elevate the profession but also inspire future generations of engineers to strive for excellence.
