Dr. Majid Manzari Presents on Validation and Innovation in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering was pleased to host Dr. Majid Manzari, Professor and Department Chair at George Washington University, for a seminar titled “On the Role of Validation in Accelerating Innovation: A Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering Perspective.”

Dr. Manzari is a highly regarded researcher in geomechanics and geotechnical earthquake engineering, with a career focused on advancing the understanding of soil behavior and the seismic performance of geo-structural systems. His work integrates experimental observations at both the element and system levels with sophisticated constitutive and numerical modeling approaches. Over the past 14 years, he has led an international research collaboration utilizing soil element testing and centrifuge modeling to validate state-of-the-art analytical tools for assessing soil liquefaction and its impact on infrastructure.

In his seminar, Dr. Manzari emphasized the critical role of validation in bridging the gap between research and practice, highlighting how rigorous experimental data can accelerate innovation and improve the reliability of engineering models.

The event brought together students, faculty, and members of the engineering community for an engaging discussion on the future of geotechnical earthquake engineering and the continued evolution of modeling techniques in the field.
