Welcome to the Department of Civil and
Environmental Engineering at
The University of Utah
On behalf of the faculty, students and alumni, I am proud to express our mission of developing engineers and leaders for the State of Utah and the world that will solve complex problems in our society and create innovative ideas for the future. We are striving to impart upon students and professionals the understanding and use of new ideas, technologies, and practices that will continue to improve society. The faculty at the U’s CvEEN program are dedicated to active learning that will instill in our students the basis for life-long learning and for successful careers as productive, ethical engineers and leaders.
Civil and Environmental Engineers are pushing the envelopes of applied science to build a more sustainable future for the world. From bridges and transportation systems, to pipelines and water treatment technologies, to buildings and tunnels; the University of Utah’s CvEEN graduates envision, design, evaluate and construct the physical backbone of the world’s commerce, cities and society. We invite the best and the brightest women and men to our CvEEN classrooms, labs, internships, scholarships, fellowships and research opportunities. The high demand for civil and environmental engineers has not diminished in the past 60 years in Utah or throughout the US. Nearly all national surveys on professional careers rank civil and environmental engineering near the top for future demand, stability and compensation.
The University of Utah is making major changes and growing in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The 2006-2007 graduated the U’s largest classes in Civil and Environmental Engineering. The Department awarded 118 degrees in civil engineering including 43 graduate degrees. These graduates are building the future for our nation’s infrastructure, commerce and society and providing Utah with first class, well trained professionals to carry out the growth and sustainability of our great state and the world. The Department is adding two new faculty for the Department's water resources and environmental division for the fall of 2007.
As the Chair of the Department, I have inherited one of the fastest growing programs in the country. Along with the department’s Energy and Geoscience Institute, Center for Nuclear Technology and Engineering and Research, the department has conducted more than $9 million in research in the past year. This gives our graduates funded opportunities to participate in cutting edge research in transportation, environmental, structural, pavement, hydraulic, geotechnical, and nuclear engineering as well as in geoscience and information systems.
