Curriculum Vitae
Personal Sketch
Dr. Bartlett has a bachelor of science in geology and a doctorate in civil engineering with an emphasis in geotechnical engineering from Brigham Young University. He is a licensed professional engineer in the State of Utah and has approximately 20 years of design and construction experience working with Westinghouse, Woodward-Clyde Consultants and the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT). He is an adjunct professor at Brigham Young University.
Dr. Bartlett is the chairman of the Utah Advisory Committee for Urban Strong-Motion Monitoring and the Utah Liquefaction Advisory Group. He is also a member of the Utah Seismic Safety Commission Lifelines Subcommittee, American Society of Civil Engineers and the Soil and Rock Instrumentation Subcommittee of the Transportation Research Board. He also is affiliated with the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute.
Research Areas
Dr. Bartlett's specialty areas are in geotechnical earthquake engineering, lightweight embankment construction, foundation stabilization, geotechnical instrumentation, strong ground motion monitoring and assessment and analysis of liquefaction-induced lateral spread. He has worked on projects that include highways, dams, tailings impoundments, pipelines, hazardous and radioactive waste facilities and building foundations for the Department of Energy, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Utah Department of Transportation and the private sector.
He has active research topics involving liquefaction mapping, ground response analysis, seismic retrofitting of bridges, construction and long-term performance of embankments and foundation treatments including: geofoam, prefabricated vertical drains, lime cement columns and mechanically stabilized earth walls.
